Newsletter June 2017

June 2017 marks 50 years of Israeli occupation of the West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem. In 2016 alone, Israeli security forces killed 101 Palestinians, including 31 minors and arrested 1332 minors and 6440 adults. At the end of 2016 there were 98 checkpoints inside the West Bank, besides hundreds of other physical obstructions, such as dirt embankments, concrete blocks, iron gates and trenches. During this year the Israeli authorities demolished 48 houses leaving 378 people without a home. These are statistics from just one year and they cover only a limited part of Palestinians who live under Israeli occupation; imagine what it is like living like this for 50 years.
After 50 years of occupation there are more than half a million settlers in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. Most of the world, including the Netherlands, refrain from any real criticism, and it has become clear that under these circumstances Israel will not give up its control over the Palestinians territories and population. For this to happen, clear and effective international intervention is absolutely necessary. Without international interventions, including material consequences and not only rhetorical ones, the Palestinian people will never receive the justice and freedom they deserve.

Jerusalem, We Are Here. An interactive documentary

Jerusalem2
An interactive documentary that digitally brings Palestinians back to Jerusalem. A presentation with filmmaker Dorit Naaman If houses and streets, neighbourhoods and cities could tell us their stories, what would these be? The present dominates our sense of space, but the past is always enduring under the surface, even when it has been socially, politically and economically concealed. In this AHM Lecture Series Prof. Dorit Naaman will show her interactive documentary ‘Jerusalem, We Are Here’. The documentary digitally brings Palestinians back into the Jerusalem neighbourhoods from which they were expelled in 1948. Focusing primarily on the neighbourhood of Read more

Bevrijding Of Bezetting, Opinion by Galit Saporta, the director of gate48, on joop.nl

jerusalem 2

Israel seen through its arms trade: an alternative narrative

_MG_0316_internet
In his lecture Eitay Mack critically examines the dynamics between two narratives of Israel’s arms trade and its conduct in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The official narrative of the State of Israel since its founding portrays it as a frontier for western Jewish democracy founded upon liberal values and respecting international norms and civil rights.

Public event and masterclass with professor Ella Shohat

Ella Shohat
Prof. Ella Shohat is an Iraqi Israeli woman living and teaching in the U.S. She is considered one of the leading postcolonial theorists. Shohat was one of the first to write and theorize about the experience of Mizrahim, Jews from non-European/Eastern descent in Israel. To become part of the European project Jews had to de-orientalize themselves and were contrasted with Muslims and Jews from the Orient. Her current studies deal with the multifaceted and long history of Judeo-Muslim culture that is not often acknowledged. In the public event at the Nieuwe Liefde Matthea Westerduin and Yolande Jansen will go into a conversation Read more

Statement by the UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities, on the 50th Anniversary of Israel’s Occupation

ocha
Statement by the UN Coordinator for Humanitarian Aid and Development Activities, Robert Piper, on the 50th Anniversary of Israel’s Occupation | United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs – occupied Palestinian territory This week marks 50 years since the start of Israel’s occupation of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. For humanitarians this is the most long-standing protection crisis in the UN’s history. It should be obvious, but it bears repeating, that Occupation is ugly. Living under foreign military rule for years on end, generates despair, suffocates initiative and leaves generations in a kind Read more
