Frank Westerman's Provinciale Schrijverij 56

media do not function in the manner of the propaganda system of a totalitarian state. Rather, they permit — indeed, encourage — spirited debate, criticism, and dissent, as long as these remain faithfully within the system of presuppositions and principles that constitute an elite consensus, a system so powerful as to be internalized largely without awareness.

most of the coverage, even on Fox News, was negative — in the case of Fox News because the network appeared to have imposed a bias in favor of GOP establishment candidates, like Jeb Bush, who were supported by Republican leaders in New York and Washington. What seemed clear in the summer of 2015 was that the bi-coastal mainstream media heavily favored Hillary to win, even to the point of suppressing bad news that might negatively impact Hillary’s candidacy, while promoting any news that might cause Trump trouble. But the point, which should have been obvious to all experienced political operatives, was that Trump had managed to dominate all news coverage of the 2016 presidential campaign. Whether the audience loved or hated Trump, the only thing the American public wanted to talk about during the summer of 2015 was Trump. The news dominance Trump was commanding was rivaled in modern times only by the sensation Barack Obama caused when he first came on the national scene.

Themes of uniqueness have characterized the American experience from the very beginning, and Americans cling to the conviction that in many ways they are markedly different from the other peoples of the earth.

In ‘American Exceptionalism,’ Seymour Lipset (‘the leading theorist of democracy and American exceptionalism.’ svh) delves deeply into those things that set America apart from the rest of the world and concludes that American uniqueness is a two edged sword. According to Lipset, America is the most religious, most optimistic, most patriotic, most rights-oriented and most individualistic country on earth. At the same time, it is the most litigious (twistziek. svh), has the highest crime rates and the most people incarcerated and the lowest percentage of eligible voters registered to vote of all the developed nations. Similarly, the United States is the wealthiest nation in terms of real income, the most productive as reflection of worker output with the highest proportion of her population enrolled in higher education. However, it is also ‘the least egalitarian among developed nations with respect to income distribution, at the bottom as a provider of welfare benefits, the lowest in savings, and the least taxed.’ Lipset for example, finds the US the most moralistic of nations but the nation with the highest crime and divorce rate. What is more, according to Lipset, both the good and the bad among American's unique qualities often spring from the same source. For instance, American individualism, with its high sense of personal responsibility and independent initiative, is the driving moral force behind so many Americans political, social, and economic successes. At the same time, it also lies at the heart of American lawlessness, self-indulgence, atomism, and the nation's failure to address social inequities.

All national groups seek to define distinguishing characteristics in order to set themselves off from other nationalities. Belief in national uniqueness is prerequisite to nationalism and to feelings of national superiority. In most nations, distinguishing characteristics include language, religion, skin color, place of origin, or cultural traditions. In this regard, all nations are to some extent unique, however American notions of national uniqueness are rooted in none or these. In this view, American uniqueness is itself unique. America views itself not only as a unique nation but also as an exceptional nation — ‘exceptional in the sense of being exemplary, or a beacon among nations, or immune from the social ills and decadence that have beset all other republics in the past; or that it is exempt from the historical course of 'social laws' of development which all nations eventually follow.’

De laatste definiëring is van Daniel Bell, ‘the Henry Ford II Professor of Social Sciences Emeritus at Harvard University and Scholar-in-Residence at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He is the author of editor of 17 books, two of which, The End of Ideology and The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism, were listed among the 100 Most Influential Books since the Second World War (TLS, October 1995).’ Het  laatstgenoemde boek is een ‘classic analysis of Western liberal capitalist society,’ waarin Bell stelt ‘that capitalism — and the culture it creates — harbors the seeds of its own downfall by creating a need among successful people for personal gratification — a need that corrodes the work ethic that led to their success in the first place. With the end of the Cold War and the emergence of a new world order, this provocative manifesto is more relevant than ever.’

An Inner History of the New America (2013).

Opnieuw Walter Caldwell’s American Narcissism:

Themes of uniqueness lie at both the beginning and the end of all American superiority myths. In order to consider ourselves superior, we must begin by defining ourselves as unique. Conversely, once we define ourselves as superior, themes of uniqueness are expanded and inscribed in stone. The stronger America’s sense of uniqueness and superiority becomes, the stronger the potential for alienation from reality.

Despite pride in her unique national diversity and her widely perceived notions of unparalleled equality and social flexibility, America was far from the Utopian brotherhood she patriotically thought herself to be. From the very beginning of the national epic, the majority of Americans were of Anglo-Saxon descent. While paying lip service to the ‘melting pot,’ large parts of this majority held race at the heart of their notions of national superiority and at the center of their worldview. Imported from England in colonial times, the myth of Anglo-Saxon racial supremacy soon inhabited the core of America's self image. The racial traits of both peoples (Americans and English) were defined to include ‘industry, intelligence, a keen sense of moral purpose, and a talent for government. It was not long before America came to view herself as the heir to British imperial wealth and power. In 1889 Senator Albert Beverage predicted that the US was destined to become ‘a greater England with a nobler destiny.’

Since trade ignores national boundaries and the manufacturer insists on having the world as a market, the flag of his nation must follow him, and the doors of the nations which are closed must be battered down. Concessions obtained by financiers must be safeguarded by ministers of state, even if the sovereignty of unwilling nations be outraged in the process. Colonies must be obtained or planted, in order that no useful corner of the world may be overlooked or left unused.

Met het oog daarop verklaarde de invloedrijke Senator Albert Beveridge: 'The Philippines are ours forever... and just beyond the Philippines are China's illimitable markets... The Pacific is ours.'

Oorlog is misdaad.

De bekende Amerikaanse historicus, wijlen Howard Zinn, schreef in A Young People's History of the United States (2007) over de toenmalige elite:

These politicians and others believed that the United States had to open up other countries to American goods — even if those markets were not eager to buy. If factories and farms could sell their surplus production overseas, American companies would keep earning money, and the economy might avoid the crises that had sparked class war in the 1890s.

War was probably not a thought-out plan among most of the elite ruling classes. Instead, it grew naturally from two sources, capitalism and nationalism. Capitalism demanded more markets. Nationalism, the spirit of strong national pride, made people think that the United States had a right, or even a duty, to expand itself and to shape the affairs of other countries.

Stretching the United States' arm overseas was not a new idea. The war against Mexico had already carried the United States to the Pacific Ocean. Before that, in 1823, President James Monroe had produced the Monroe Doctrine. This statement made it clear that the United States claimed an interest in the politics of the entire Western Hemisphere — North, Central, and South America. It warned the nations of Europe not to meddle with countries in the America's.

The United States, however, didn't feel that it had to stay out of other countries' affairs. Between 1798 and 1895, the United States sent troops to other countries, or took an active role in their affairs, 103 times. In the 1850s, for example, the U.S. Navy used warships to force Japan to open its ports to American shipping.

At the end of the nineteenth century, many military men, politicians, and business men supported the idea of still more foreign involvement. A writer for the Washington Post said:

'A new consciousness seems to have come upon us — the consciousness of strength — and with it a new appetite, the yearning to show our strength… The taste of Empire is in the mouth of the people.'

Caldwell:

No one knows exactly when the myth of Anglo-Saxon superiority began. It doubtless goes back to the first Angles and Saxons, back to the very beginnings of Teutonic and Aryan peoples in the pre-history of the Asian steps. Whatever its origin, we know that the modern origin of this myth took shape in the nineteenth century as national conflicts  raged between Germanic peoples east of the Rhine and Romantic peoples (Latijns sprekende volkeren. svh) in France. In the last thirty years of the nineteenth century when Franco-Prussian relations began to seriously deteriorate, this myth flourished as a result of the bitter polemic between France and Germany.

As the last decades of the century unfolded, ‘everywhere the Germanic/Romantic question was given national dimension.’ In England, the historian Francis Palgrave led the Romantic charge holding that the character of the British Isles had been unscathed by the Anglo-Saxon invasion and that the Norman invasion had further reinforced Romanic traditions in England. On the Germanic side of argument, Edward Freeman, Regius Professor of History at Oxford, argued that British political and social institutions owed their notable success to the Anglo-Saxon influence, which had come to dominate Romantic culture in Great Britain. Freeman published ‘Comparative Politics’ in 1873 proclaiming the superiority of the ‘Aryan nations’ in setting up ‘constitutional institutions.’

‘[I]n this mighty drama of European and Aryan history, three lands, three races, stand forth before all others, as those to whom, each in its own day, the mission has been given to be the rulers and teachers of the world… As the Aryan family of nations, as a whole, stands out above the other families of the word, so the Greek, the Roman, and the Teuton, each in its own turn, stands out above the other nations of the Aryan family.’

Churchill mistakenly believed that Aryans were white. He also ‘learned’ at school that Britain’s colonies were the superior ‘white’ man was conquering the primitive, dark-skinned natives, and bringing them the benefits of civilization. Later, as an MP (parlementslid. svh) he demanded a rolling program of more conquests, based on his belief that ‘the Aryan stock is bound to triumph.’ As soon as he could, Churchill charged off to take his part in ‘a lot of jolly little wars against barbarous peoples.’ He charged through imperial atrocities, defending each in turn. In the Swat valley, now part of Pakistan, he gladly took part in raids that laid waste to whole valleys, destroying houses and burning crops. He then sped off to help reconquer the Sudan, where he bragged that he personally shot at least three ‘savages.’ When concentration camps were built in South Africa, for white Boers, he said they produced ‘the minimum of suffering.’ The death toll was almost 28,000, and when at least 115,000 black Africans were likewise swept into British camps, where 14,000 died, he wrote only of his ‘irritation that Kaffirs [Niggers] should be allowed to fire on white men.’ Later, he boasted of his experiences there: ‘That was before war degenerated. It was great fun galloping about.’  As Colonial Secretary in the 1920s, he unleashed the notorious Black and Tan thugs on Ireland’s Catholic civilians. When the Kurds rebelled against British rule, he said: ‘I am strongly in favor of using poisoned gas against uncivilized tribes…[It] would spread a lively terror.’ When Mahatma Gandhi launched his campaign of peaceful resistance, Churchill raged that he ‘ought to be lain bound hand and foot at the gates of Delhi, and then trampled on by an enormous elephant with the new Viceroy seated on its back.’ As the resistance swelled, he announced: ‘I hate Indians. They are a beastly people with a beastly religion.’ This hatred killed.

In 1943 a famine broke out in Bengal, caused — as the Nobel Prize-winning economist Amartya Sen has proved – by the imperial policies of the British. Up to 3 million people starved to death while British officials begged Churchill to direct food supplies to the region. He bluntly refused. He raged that it was their own fault for ‘breeding like rabbits.’ At other times, he said the plague was ‘merrily’ culling (slachten. svh) the population.

Skeletal, half-dead people were streaming into the cities and dying on the streets, but Churchill — to the astonishment of his staff — had only jeers for them. This rather undermines the claims that Churchill’s imperialism was motivated only by an altruistic desire to elevate the putatively lower races.

The NSDAP (‘Nazis’), fought a war that lasted a few years.  Churchill’s horrors spanned decades. Hitler’s Germany fought a war on two West Asian (‘European’) fronts. Churchill’s England’s atrocities spanned 3 continents. There really is no comparison. The Prime Minister meets with the monarch regularly, so the King and later Queen obviously approved and encouraged these activities.  England is incomparably worse than the worse you’ve heard about Nazi Germany.

Caldwell voegt hieraan toe:

However, it was not only the English connection that proved the most influential in spreading theories of Aryan, Teutonic, and specifically Anglo-Saxon superiority in America. In the last decades of the nineteenth century, new emphasis and techniques were propelling the study of history to the intellectual forefront in the West, and German scholars were among the first to develop improved methods of historical analysis and advanced techniques in the handling of source materials. Virtually all the prominent American historians of the era studied in Germany. They returned to America with improved German historigraphical methodology and, in many cases, with the Anglo-Saxon superiority myth in tow. Notable in this list is Henry Adams at Harvard, John Burgess at Columbia, Andrew White at Cornell, Charles Adams at the University of Michigan, and Herbert Baxter Adams at Johns Hopkins, who attributed the birth of the principles of individualism and federalism to the tribal system of the Anglo-Saxons. ‘Montesquieu's winged phrase “freedom came from the German forests” acquired a new ring on Adams lips.’ Or as the American historian John Fiske put it in 1885: ‘In the deepest and widest sense, our American history does not begin with the Declaration of Independence, or even with the settlements at Jamestown and Plymouth; but it descends in unbroken continuity from the days when the stout Arminius (Germaanse veldheer, die als aanvoerder van Germaanse stammen, de Romeinen wisten terug te dringen van de Elbe naar de Rijn. svh) in the forests of Northern Germany successfully defied the might of Imperial Rome.

However, the notion that American superiority was born in the forests of Europe ran counter to purely American egoisms. To answer this objection, a new more distinctly American version of the Anglo-Saxon superiority myth emerged. The new myth acknowledged the innate superiority of the Anglo-Saxon peoples who represented the American majority, but it held that in the course of the American experience, this race's dominate superior traits had been watered down by time and by mixing with the other races and cultures that made up the American minorities. In the new myth, it was the American frontier experience that augmented, re-energized, and re-released the dominant Anglo-Saxon supremacy of the American people.

As the theory of Anglo-Saxon superiority gained momentum in America, it was attached to more than just the success of her social and political institutions. Before long it was thought that the unparalleled wit and adaptively Anglo-Saxon leadership also led America to superior economic achievement. As Edward N. Saveth (Amerikaanse hoogleraar geschiedenis. svh) put it:

‘The conception of individual liberty, local self-government, freedom from external control which the new historical school claimed to have discovered in the German forests not only provided a basis for the American national character but contributed additional support to a strongly developed philosophy of laissez-faire.... The last stage in the evolution of the heroic Teuton was as the captain of industry, bringing the benefits of ‘political organization' to inferior races and resisting the attempts of non-Aryans to fetter  (ketenen. svh) his individuality with the chains of socialism.’

[w]hen our own nation is at war with any other, we detest them under the character of cruel, perfidious, unjust and violent: But always esteem ourselves and allies equitable, moderate, and merciful. If the general of our enemies be successful, it is with difficulty we allow him the figure and character of a man. He is a sorcerer: He has a communication with daemons; as is reported of Oliver Cromwell, and the Duke of Luxembourg: He is bloody-minded, and takes a pleasure in death and destruction. But if the success be on our side, our commander has all the opposite good qualities, and is a pattern of virtue, as well as of courage and conduct. His treachery we call policy: His cruelty is an evil inseparable from war. In short, every one of his faults we either endeavor to extenuate, or dignify it with the name of that virtue, which approached it. It is evident the same method of thinking runs through common life.

Twee vliegen in ‘eh…’ De vooraanstaande oud-correspondent van The New York Times, Chris Hedges, waarschuwde in zijn boek boek War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning (2003):

We are quick to accept the facile and mendacious ideological veneer that is wrapped like a mantle around the shoulders of those who prosecute war… We demonize the enemy so that our opponent is no longer human. We view ourselves, our people, as the embodiment of  absolute goodness. Our enemies invert our view of the world to justify their own cruelty. In most mythic wars this is the case. Each side reduces the other to objects — eventually in the form of corpses.

‘Force,’ Simone Wil wrote, ‘is as pitiless to the man who possesses it, or thinks he does, as it is to its victim; the second it crushes, the first it intoxicates.’

The chief institutions that disseminate the myth are the press and the state. The press has been culpable since the telegraph made possible the modern war correspondent. And starting with the Crimean War, when the first dispatches were fed by newly minted war correspondents in real time, nearly every reporter has seen his or her mission as sustaining civilian and army morale. The advent of photography and film did little to alter the incentive to boost morale, for the lie in war is almost always the lie of omission. The blunders and senseless slaughter by our generals, the execution of prisoners and innocents, and the horror of wounds are rarely disclosed, at least during a mythic war, to the public. Only when the myth is punctured, as it eventually was in Vietnam, does the press begin to report in sensory rather than a mythic manner. But even then it is reacting to a public that has changed its perception of war. The press usually does not lead.

Bovendien zijn er ‘many intellectuals willing to champion and defend absurd theories for nationalist ends, zoals talloze Nederlandse academici aantonen, zonder dat zij zich rekenschap ervan geven dat ‘[m]odern war is directed primarily against civilians,’ zoals Hedges terecht opmerkt. De Franse filosofe Simone Weil had gelijk te stellen dat ‘[t]he man who does not wear the armor of the lie cannot experience force without being touched by it to the very soul.’ Daarentegen geldt dat de ‘myth of war rarely endures for those who experience combat. War is messy, confusing, sullied by raw brutality and an elephantine fear that grabs us like a massive bouncer who comes up from behind.’  Ondertussen is men, aldus Hedges, ‘hostage to a vast and powerful military-industrial complex that exports more weapons than all other nations combined,’ terwijl tegelijkertijd ‘soldiers who kill innocents pay a tremendous personal emotional and spiritual price. But within the universe of total war, equipped with weapons that can kill hundreds or thousands of people in seconds, soldiers only have time to reflect later. By then these soldiers often have been discarded, left as broken men in a civilian society that does not understand them and does not want to understand them.’

In de essaybundel The Short American Century. A Postmortem (2012) zet in dit verband de Amerikaanse hoogleraar Nikhil Pal Singh uiteen:

To some, the election of the nation's first black president, Barack Obama, in 2008, served to refurbish America's image and standing in the world, bringing ideals and practices supposedly wrenched apart back into alignment. Yet note the irony: Obama, whose rise was scripted as a fulfillment of civil rights teleology, has not only seen his nationality and birthright widely questioned but has also been tasked with curing the ailments of an empire that still cannot speak its name. The color line, in short, still shadows and indexes American global power.

When Martin Luther King Jr. in his fateful final year described racism, materialism and militarism’ as America's interrelated flaws, he was under no illusions about the distinction between democratic development and imperial policy. King viewed the Vietnam War as a continuation of colonialism by other names, thwarting popular democratic aspirations at home and around the world. Written after 9/11, a new preface to ‘Dreams from My Father’ illustrates Obama’s own complex experiences of the world, hearkening back to this moment, as well as to the Afro-diasporic and postcolonial sensibilities of Du Bois’s earlier pronouncement (W.E.B. The conflict between ‘worlds of plenty and worlds of want,’ Obama writes arrestingly, ‘twists the lives of children on the streets of Jakarta or Nairobi in much the same way as it does the lives of the children on the South Side of Chicago.’ Failing to comprehend this dynamic, the powerful needlessly intensify a destructive spiral with their ‘dull complacency… unthinking applications of force… longer prison sentences and more sophisticated military hardware.’ Here, Asia, Africa, and black Chicago are transnational coordinates linked by shared agonies and common dreams in a world bound and divided by ever more entrenched material inequalities. Criticizing dominant responses to ensuing social and political crises that privilege force and violence, this pre-presidential Obama recognizes that questions of security cannot be easily parceled into foreign and domestic compartments. A reflexive emphasis upon military and police power, moreover, has not only failed to chief security abroad but is here implicitly associated with the rise of a sprawling U.S. prison complex vastly overpopulated by black citizens.

As a revolutionary Black nationalist whose socialism predates my facial hairs, I have no problem saying Donald Trump is not my president. Neither is the current occupant of the White House, nor were any of the Democrats, Republicans and Whigs that preceded him.

On a chilly November day in 2009 a newly-created coalition, of which I was a co-founder, marched on the White House to denounce and renounce Barack Obama as a tool of white supremacy and the imperial war machine. ‘Obama, Obama, you can’t hide — We charge you with genocide,’ we shouted, indicting the First Black President for the crimes he was busily committing in service to his masters on Wall Street. The Black is Back Coalition for Social Justice, Peace and Reparations had been formed less than two months before, largely to demonstrate that not all Black people were bamboozled by the slick corporate politician from Chicago, elected one year earlier in the nation’s first billion dollar presidential campaign. As the Coalition’s founding press release stated:

‘Black and Brown people continue to suffer the brunt of un/under-employment and predatory loan scandal crises. Military spending under Obama has increased as have the warfare this nation continues to export to Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Venezuela and Colombia. Mass incarceration, police brutality and political imprisonment remain rampant… The Black is Back Coalition warned of the ‘traps set by Obama’s so-called “post-racial” politics that perpetuates the same oppressive militarist agenda well known during the Bush regime.’

To paraphrase Fidel Castro, history has vindicated us. Obama mobilized NATO air forces and jihadist proxies to destroy Libya, which had previously enjoyed the highest living standard in Africa. He redeployed these same al Qaida terrorists to Syria, killing 400,000 people, displacing half the surviving population and bringing the U.S. to the very brink of nuclear war with Russia. This so-called ‘Son of Africa’ has effectively occupied most of the continent through a U.S. Military Command (AFRICOM) that was less than a year old when Obama was sworn into office. The African Union provides diplomatic cover for the CIA-run ‘peace keeping’ mission in Somalia, while U.S. conventional forces have infiltrated the militaries of all but two African nations. The holdouts, Eritrea and Zimbabwe, are under constant threat of regime change. Obama joined George Bush and Bill Clinton in perpetuating the 20 year-long slaughter in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has claimed more than six million lives, the worst genocide since World War Two (‘Obama, Obama, you can’t hide, We charge you with genocide!’)

With the eager assistance of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Obama baldly abetted a Nazi-spearheaded coup against the elected government in Ukraine—and then blamed Moscow when Russian-speaking Ukrainians resisted, provoking a ‘New Cold War’ that could turn hot in an instant. At the same time, Obama ‘pivoted’ to militarily confront China, whose economy is already, by some measures, larger than the U.S. The jihadist war in Syria should also be seen as a theater of imperialism’s last ditch offensive to encircle ‘Eurasia’ in hopes of preserving U.S.-based multinational corporate domination of a ‘rigged’ system of dollar-based world trade.

Just as the Black is Back Coalition warned, Barack Obama was the Black face of imperialism — a change of color without a difference. He tried to hand off the controls to Hillary Clinton, who got six million votes less than he did, and lost.

Back in 2007, when Obama and Clinton were pretending to be ideological opponents — as cookie-cutter corporate Democrats often do—we at Black Agenda Report wrote that ‘There’s not a dime’s worth of difference’ between the two. Every decent, peace-loving person on Earth should be glad to be rid of both of them. Humanity would probably not survive another year of either one.

Donald Trump is also a danger to humanity, like every other U.S. chief executive since Truman nuked Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If words mean anything, Trump starts off posing less of a doomsday international menace, since he claims to want to establish talking, rather than shouting, threatening, nuke-rattling relations with Russia and China, while Clinton’s version of ‘reset’ was an armed confrontation with Russia over the skies of Syria. Of course, all that could quickly change. Trump may be a ‘party of one’ among Republicans in Congress and even in his own cabinet.

For those who fear Trump’s ‘fascism,’ the threat level depends on how he uses the arsenal of repressive tools bequeathed to him by the Obama administration. These legal, infrastructural and technological instruments of the national security state are fascist in their intent; they were made for the purpose of tracking, disorganizing, neutralizing and locking up dissidents, and disinforming the public at large. Thus, President Obama and his predecessors were fascist-minded, whether you call their administrations operatively fascist or not. The Obama administration would not have pushed a bill through Congress allowing the U.S. military to detain American citizens without trial or charge if he had not anticipated using it. He would not have feverishly upgraded an omnipresent national and global surveillance apparatus if he did not anticipate putting it to the task of martial rule. Fascist-minded is all that can be said of Trump, at this point, as well.

In hetzelfde Black Agenda Report wees de zwarte politiek commentator Jon Reynolds erop dat:

If Hillary had won, the drone strikes would have continued. The wars would have continued. The spying would continue. Whistleblowers would continue being prosecuted and hunted down. And minorities would continue bearing the brunt of these policies, both in the US and across the world. The difference is that in such a scenario, Democrats, if the last eight years are any indication, would remain silent — as they did under Obama — offering bare minimum concern and vilifying anyone attacking their beloved president as some sort of hater. Cities across the US would remain free of protests, and for another 4-8 years, Democrats would continue doing absolutely nothing to end the same horrifying policies now promoted by a Republican.

Supporters of Barack Obama, and liberals in general, are disingenuous frauds. They had no issues protesting the likes of the amoral warmongering George W. Bush or the racist xenophobe, Donald J. Trump, however when it comes to Barack Obama they can find no reason to protest his mass murdering escapades. Obama supporters were recently nostalgic and teary eyed after he gave his last major speech as president of the United States, yet can find little reason to shed tears over the masses of civilians who were destroyed directly as a result of Obama’s policies. Where were the emotions and tears when men, women and children were getting blown to bits by USA drone attacks, indiscriminate air strikes and bombs? […] Those who protested the racist and xenophobic Trump, but not Obama or Clinton, are nothing more that disingenuous frauds and amoral cowards.

Woensdag 4 januari 2017 concludeerde Glen Ford tenslotte:

In decadence and decline, the U,S. has produced two strong strains of fascism that now vie for supremacy. The First Black President, now outgoing, represents the ‘cosmopolitan, global obsessed’ variety of fascist. Donald Trump hails from an older fascist strain, ‘crude and petty, too ugly for global prime time.’ At this stage in history, the two corporate parties seem incapable of producing anything other than fascists of one kind or the other.

The merciless downsizing of the American worker is a central element of Obama’s legacy.

Barack Obama was a savior — of a drowning ruling class. Under his administration, Wall Street rose from near-death to new heights of speculative frenzy, awash in capital brutally extracted from the vanishing assets and past and future earnings of the vast majority of the population, or gifted in the form of trillions in free money at corporate-only Federal Reserve windows. The Big Casino, reduced to a rubble of its own contradictions in 2008, ushered in the New Year just shy of the once-fantastical 20,000 mark. Analysts credited Donald Trump’s victory for the bankers’ bacchanal, but it was Obama who made the party possible by overseeing the restructuring of the U.S. economy to accommodate and encourage the hyper-consolidation of capital — another way to describe the deliberate deepening of economic (and political) inequality. Having accomplished the mission assigned him by Wall Street in return for record-breaking contributions to his first campaign, Obama is said to be angling for a hot-money squat in Silicon Valley, the super-rich sector that was most supportive of his presidency,

The age of Barack Obama may have been our last chance to break from our neoliberal soulcraft. We are rooted in market-driven brands that shun integrity and profit-driven policies that trump public goods. Our ‘post-integrity’ and ‘post-truth’ world is suffocated by entertaining brands and money-making activities that have little or nothing to do with truth, integrity or the long-term survival of the planet. We are witnessing the postmodern version of the full-scale gangsterization of the world.

The reign of Obama did not produce the nightmare of Donald Trump — but it did contribute to it. And those Obama cheerleaders who refused to make him accountable bear some responsibility.

A few of us begged and pleaded with Obama to break with the Wall Street priorities and bail out Main Street. But he followed the advice of his ‘smart’ neoliberal advisers to bail out Wall Street. In March 2009, Obama met with Wall Street leaders. He proclaimed: I stand between you and the pitchforks. I am on your side and I will protect you, he promised them. And not one Wall Street criminal executive went to jail.

We called for the accountability of US torturers of innocent Muslims and the transparency of US drone strikes killing innocent civilians. Obama’s administration told us no civilians had been killed. And then we were told a few had been killed. And then told maybe 65 or so had been killed. Yet when an American civilian, Warren Weinstein, was killed in 2015 there was an immediate press conference with deep apologies and financial compensation. And today we still don’t know how many have had their lives taken away.

We hit the streets again with Black Lives Matter and other groups and went to jail for protesting against police killing black youth. We protested when the Israeli Defense Forces killed more than 2,000 Palestinians (including 550 children) in 50 days. Yet Obama replied with words about the difficult plight of police officers, department investigations (with no police going to jail) and the additional $225 million in financial support of the Israeli army. Obama said not a mumbling word about the dead Palestinian children but he did call Baltimore black youth ‘criminals and thugs.’

In addition, Obama’s education policy unleashed more market forces that closed hundreds of public schools for charter ones. The top 1% got nearly two-thirds of the income growth in eight years even as child poverty, especially black child poverty, remained astronomical. Labor insurgencies in Wisconsin, Seattle and Chicago (vigorously opposed by Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a close confidant of Obama) (en zoon van een zionistische terrorist. svh) were passed over in silence.

In 2009, Obama called New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg an ‘outstanding mayor.’ Yet he overlooked the fact that more than 4 million people were stopped-and-frisked under Bloomberg’s watch. Along with Carl Dix and others, I sat in a jail two years later for protesting these very same policies that Obama ignored when praising Bloomberg.

Yet the mainstream media and academia failed to highlight these painful truths linked to Obama. Instead, most well-paid pundits on TV and radio celebrated the Obama brand. And most black spokespeople shamelessly defended Obama’s silences and crimes in the name of racial symbolism and their own careerism. How hypocritical to see them now speak truth to white power when most went mute in the face of black power. Their moral authority is weak and their newfound militancy is shallow.

The gross killing of US citizens with no due process after direct orders from Obama was cast aside by neoliberal supporters of all colors. And Edward Snowden, Chelsea Manning, Jeffrey Sterling and other truth-tellers were demonized just as the crimes they exposed were hardly mentioned.

The president’s greatest legislative achievement was to provide healthcare for over 25 million citizens, even as another 20 million are still uncovered. But it remained a market-based policy, created by the conservative Heritage Foundation and first pioneered by Mitt Romney in Massachusetts.

Obama’s lack of courage to confront Wall Street criminals and his lapse of character in ordering drone strikes unintentionally led to rightwing populist revolts at home and ugly Islamic fascist rebellions in the Middle East. And as deporter-in-chief — nearly 2.5 million immigrants were deported under his watch — Obama policies prefigure Trump’s barbaric plans.

Bernie Sanders gallantly tried to generate a leftwing populism but he was crushed by Clinton and Obama in the unfair Democratic party primaries. So now we find ourselves entering a neofascist era: a neoliberal economy on steroids, a reactionary repressive attitude toward domestic ‘aliens,’ a militaristic cabinet eager for war and in denial of global warming. All the while, we are seeing a wholesale eclipse of truth and integrity in the name of the Trump brand, facilitated by the profit-hungry corporate media.

What a sad legacy for our hope and change candidate — even as we warriors go down swinging in the fading names of truth and justice.

FLASHBACK: DEMOCRACY NOW! SHOW FUNDER CENSORS ANTI-WAR JOURNALIST JOHN PILGER
"According to the Lannan Foundation’s Form 990 financial filing for 2008, Amy Goodman’s Democracy Now! Productions was given three grants, totaling $375,000"
"The Lannan Foundation in Santa Fe, New Mexico, believes in free speech. The foundation’s website says it is `dedicated to cultural freedom, diversity and creativity’. "
"But the Lannan Foundation apparently doesn’t want to allow anti-war journalists who criticize the Democratic Obama Administration’s failure to end the endless U.S. military intervention in Iraq-Afghanistan-Pakistan-Libya-Yemen-Somalia to speak too freely in the United States these days, as indicated by Australian anti-war journalist and anti-war filmmaker John Pilger’s recent experience with Democracy Now!‘s foundation funder."
John Pilger:“The reaction to the Lannan ban has been illuminating. The brave, like the great whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, were appalled and said so. Similarly, many ordinary Americans called into radio stations and have written to me, recognising a symptom of far greater suppression. But some exalted liberal voices have been affronted that I dared whisper the word, censorship, about such a beacon of `cultural freedom’. The embarrassment of those who wish to point both ways is palpable. Others have pulled down the shutters and said nothing. Given their patron’s ruthless show of power, it is understandable. For them, the Russian dissident poet Yevgeny Yevtushenko once wrote, `When truth is replaced by silence, the silence is a lie.’

The ‘White Helmets’ Controversy
"And, this love-fest is not just confined to establishment media. DEMOCRACY NOW ran a puff piece interview with the White Helmet infomercial directors. THE INTERCEPT published an uncritical promotion of the “White Helmets” and the group’s controversial leader. CODEPINK recommended the Netflix movie (though after receiving criticism about the endorsement, the anti-war group removed it)."
