Vluchtelingenstroom 102

-- Primo Levi

In zijn fascinerende studie 1177 B.C. The Year Civilization Collapsed (2014)beschrijft de Amerikaan Eric H. Cline, hoogleraar Oudheid en Antropologie, de overeenkomsten tussen de situatie ruim drieduizend jaar geleden en nu:

The economy of Greece is in shambles. Internal rebellions have engulfed Libya, Syria, and Egypt, with outsiders and foreign warriors fanning the flames. Turkey fears it will become involved, as does Israel. Jordan is crowded with refugees. Iran is bellicose and threatening, while Iraq is in turmoil. AD 2013? Yes. But it was also the situation in 1177 BC, more than three thousand years ago, when the Bronze Age Mediterranean civilizations collapsed one after the other, changing forever the course and the future of the Western world. It was a pivotal moment in history — a turning point for the ancient world.

The Bronze Age in the Aegean, Egypt, and the Near East lasted nearly two thousand years, from approximately 3000 BC to just after 1200 BC. When the end came, as it did after centuries of cultural and technological evolution, most of the civilized and international world of the Mediterranean regions came to a dramatic halt in a vast area stretching from Greece and Italy in the west to Egypt, Canaan, and Mesopotamia in the east. Large empires and small kingdoms, which had taken centuries to evolve, collapsed rapidly. With their end came a period of transition, once regarded by scholars as the worlds first Dark Age. It was not until centuries later that a new cultural renaissance emerged in Greece and the other affected areas, setting the stage for the evolution of Western society as we know it today.

Although this book is primarily concerned with the collapse of Bronze Age civilizations and the factors that lead to that collapse more than three millennia ago, it may contain lessons relevant to our globalized and transnationalized societies today. Some might assume that there is no valid comparison to be made between the world of the Late Bronze Age and our current technology-driven culture. However, there are enough similarities between the two — including diplomatic embassies and economic trade embargoes; kidnappings and ransoms; murders and royal assassinations; magnificent marriages and unpleasant divorces; international intrigues and deliberate military disinformation; climate change and drought; and even a shipwreck or two — that taking a closer look at the events, peoples, and places of an era that existed more than three millennia ago is more than merely an academic exercise in studying ancient history. In the current global economy, and in a world recently wracked (verwoest. svh) by earthquakes and tsunamis in Japan and the ‘Arab Spring’ democratic revolutions in Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria, and Yemen, the fortunes and investments of the United States and Europe are inextricably intertwined within an international system that also involves East Asia and the oil-producing nations of the Middle East. Thus, there is potentially much to be gleaned (op te maken. svh) from an examination of the shattered remains of similarly intertwined civilizations that collapsed more than three thousand years ago.

Most relevant is her observation that the situation at the end of the Late Bronze Age provides an analogy for our own ‘increasingly homogenous yet uncontrollable global economy and culture, in which... political uncertainties on one side of the world can drastically affect the economies of regions thousands of miles away.’

De centrale vraag van Cline is ‘why a stable international system suddenly collapsed after flourishing for centuries,’ een vraag die actueel is geworden nu de westerse hegemonie na vijf eeuwen onaantastbaarheid aan het wankelen is gebracht. De ineenstorting die een einde maakte aan de cultuur van het Bronzen Tijdperk ‘was a loss such as the world would not see again until the Roman Empire collapsed more than fifteen hundred years later.’

We have seen that for more than three hundred years during the Late Bronze Age — from about the time of Hatshepsut's reign beginning about 1500 BC until the time that everything collapsed after 1200 BC — the Mediterranean region played host to a complex international world in which Minoans, Mycenaeans, Hittites, Assyrians, Babylonians, Mittannians, Canaanites, Cypriots, and Egyptians all interacted, creating a cosmopolitan and globalized world system such as has only rarely been seen before the current day. It may have been this very internationalism that contributed to the apocalyptic disaster that ended the Bronze Age. The cultures of the Near East, Egypt, and Greece seem to have been so intertwined and interdependent by 1177 BC that the fall of one ultimately brought down the others, as, one after another, the flourishing civilizations were destroyed by acts of man or nature, or a lethal combination of both.

all civilizations eventually experience violent restructuring of material and ideological realities such as destruction or re-creation.

Professor Cline zelf voegt hieraan toe:

We see this in the constant rise and fall of empires over time, including the Akkadians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Hittites, Neo-Assyrians, Neo-Babylonians, Persians, Macedonians, Romans. Mongols, Ottomans, and others, and we should not think that our current world is invulnerable, for we are in fact more susceptible than we might wish to think. While the 2008 collapse of Wall Street in the United States pales (verbleekt. svh) in comparison to the collapse of the entire Late Bronze Age Mediterranean world, there were those who warned that something similar could take place if the banking institutions with a global reach were not bailed out immediately. For instance, the Washington Post quoted Robert B. Zoellick, then the president of the World Bank, as saying that ‘the global financial system may have reached a “tipping point”’ which he defined as ‘the moment when a crisis cascades into a full-blown meltdown and becomes extremely difficult for governments to contain. In a complex system such as our world today, this is all it might take for the overall system to become destabilized, leading to a collapse.

This we know:  All things are connected.  Whatever befalls the earth befalls the sons of the earth.  Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand in it.  Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.

Experts have calculated that if the next twelve countries in the military world ranking were to join forces, America would still be the most powerful. Yet it has been in a virtually permanent state of fear and war for the past seven decades, ever since 1941. Victory in 1945 did not bring real peace. On the contrary, intense feelings of insecurity remained. Every emergency, every declaration of war in the world was a fresh danger signal.

That perpetual fear seems all the more remarkable given that America, from a strategic point of view, is in an extremely safe geographical position, bounded by two oceans. Some believe the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941 and 9/11, sixty years later, were hugely traumatic events for precisely that reason. America really did seem to be within reach of a foreign enemy.

Others argue that their country's safe location has created unrealistic expectations of security. Many politicians and ordinary citizens nowadays have the idea that this 'great' and 'unique' nation need never accept even the threat of aggression. A preventive war or the suspension of treaties, constitutions and civic freedoms — such things are permissible in their eyes if there is even the slightest threat to national security.

when the last Red Man shall have perished, and the memory of my tribe shall have become a myth among the White Men, these shores will swarm with the invisible dead of my tribe, and when your children's children think themselves alone in the field, the store, the shop, upon the highway, or in the silence of the pathless woods, they will not be alone. In all the earth there is no place dedicated to solitude. At night when the streets of your cities and villages are silent and you think them deserted, they will throng with the returning hosts that once filled them and still love this beautiful land. The White Man will never be alone.

Let him be just and deal kindly with my people, for the dead are not powerless. Dead, did I say? There is no death, only a change of worlds.

Those that are pushed out of life in chagrin come back unappeased, for revenge. A curious thing about the Spirit of Place is the fact that no place exerts its full influence upon a new-comer until the old inhabitant is dead or absorbed. So America. While the Red Indian existed in fairly large numbers, the new colonials were in a great measure immune from the daimon, or demon, of America. The moment the last nuclei of Red life break up in America, then the white men will have to reckon with the full force of the demon on the continent. At present the demon of the place and the unappeased ghosts of the dead Indians act within the unconscious or under-conscious soul of the white American, causing the great American grouch, the Orestes-like frenzy of restlessness in the Yankee soul, the inner malaise which amounts almost to madness, sometimes.

creeping, all pervading, nerve-gas of immorality which starts in the nursery and does not stop before it reaches the highest offices, both corporate and governmental.

En een

nervous restlessness, a hunger, a thirst, a yearning for something unknown — perhaps morality,

Look at the origen legends of the judeo-christian people. You have an origen legend that says that Adam and Eve were banished onto earth and earth is an enemy…this is a place of banishment and you don’t really have to care for it because someday you are going back to paradise when you complete your banishment.

The white man does not understand America. He is too far removed from its formative processes. The roots of the tree of his life have not yet grasped the rock and the soil. The white man is still troubled by primitive fears; he still has in his consciousness the perils of this frontier continent, some of it not yet having yielded to his questing footsteps and inquiring eyes… The man from Europe  is still a foreigner and an alien. And he still hates the man who questioned his path across the continent… Men must be born and reborn to belong. Their bodies must be formed of the dust of their forefathers bones.

De Amerikaanse dichter William Carlos Williams begreep dit en schreef: ‘The only universal is the local  as savages, artists and — to al lesser extent — peasants know.’

Pueblo societies a kind of ultimate democracy is practiced. Plants and animals are also people, and, though certain rituals and dances, are given a place and a voice in the political discussions of the humans.

Snyder benadrukt terecht dat dit ‘stewardship’ neerkomt op ‘find your place on the planet, dig in, and take responsibility from there,’ hetgeen in de praktijk betekent:

Get a sense of workable territory, learn about it, and sart acting point by point. On all levels from national to local the need to move toward steady state economy — equilibrium, dynamic balance, inner growth stressed —  must be taught. Maturity/diversity/climax/creativity.

Man is but a part of the fabric of life — dependent on the whole fabric for his very existence. As the most highly developed tool-using animal, he must recognize that the unknown evolutionary destinies of other life forms are to be respected, and act as a gentle steward of the earth’s community of being.

Their most likely use of a problem, or crisis, is to seize it as another excuse for extending their own powers.

Lawrence schreef:

it is a great book, a very great book, the greatest book of the sea ever written. It moves awe in the soul.
The terrible fatality.
Fatality.
Doom.
Doom! Doom! Doom! Something seems to whisper it in the very dark trees of America. Doom!
Doom of what?
Doom of our white day. We are doomed, doomed. And the doom is in America. The doom of our white day.

Ah, well, if my day is doomed, and I am doomed with my day, it is something greater than I which dooms me, so I accept my doom as a sign of the greatness which is more than I am.

Melville knew. He knew his race was doomed. His white soul, doomed. His great white epoch, doomed. Himself, doomed. The idealist, doomed. The spirit, doomed.

The reversion. 'Not so much bound to any haven ahead, as rushing from all havens astern.' That great horror of ours! It is our civilization rushing from all havens astern.
The last ghastly hunt. The White Whale.

What then is Moby Dick? He is the deepest blood-being of the white race; he is our deepest blood-nature. And he is hunted, hunted, hunted by the maniacal fanaticism of our white mental consciousness. We want to hunt him down. To subject him to our will. And in this maniacal conscious hunt of ourselves we get dark races and pale to help us, red, yellow, and black, east and west, Quaker and fire-worshipper, we get them all to help us in this ghastly maniacal hunt which is our doom and our suicide…

The Pequod went down. And the Pequod was the ship of the white American soul. She sank, taking with her negro and Indian and Polynesian, Asiatic and Quaker and good, businesslike Yankees and Ishmael: she sank all the lot of them?

If the Great White Whale sank the ship of the Great White Soul in 1851, what's been happening ever since? Post-mortem effects, presumably.

Zo stelde F. Scott Fitzgerald in zijn pijnlijk eerlijke, postuum verschenen boek The Crack-Up (1945) over de zogeheten 'roaring twenties'

All the stories that came into my head had a touch of disaster in them -- the lovely young creatures in my novels went to ruin, the diamond mountains of my short stories blew up, my millionaires were as beautiful and damned as Thomas Hardy's peasants. In life these things hadn't happened yet, but I was pretty sure living wasn't the reckless, careless business these people thought -- this generation younger than me.

One begins to sense a wide gap between the fantasies Americans live by and the realities they live in. Americans know from an early age how they're supposed to look when happy and what they're supposed to do or buy to be happy. But for some reason their fantasies are unrealizable and leave them disappointed and embittered.

‘His great white epoch, doomed. Himself, doomed. The idealist, doomed. The spirit, doomed.’
