In this week’s episode of “Days of Revolt,” Truthdig contributor Chris Hedges sits down with Kip Anderson and Keegan Kuh, co-directors of the documentary “Cowspiracy: The Sustainability Secret”—the film that Hedges reveals led him to become a vegan.
In the half-hour interview, they discuss the devastating effects of animal agriculture on our climate, the draconian “Ag Gag” laws that suppress honest reporting on the industry, and the conditions animals raised for consumption are forced to live in.
“Eighty percent of all antibiotics sold in the United States go into animal agriculture,” Kuh says, “because these animals live in such horrendous conditions, the only way to keep them alive is to feed them drugs.”
The filmmakers also explain how environmental organizations on these issues because higher-ups within them are often involved in the animal agriculture industry. “They’re a part of the problem,” Anderson says, adding that “it’s kind of like going to the American Lung Association and the whole board of directors are sitting around smoking cigarettes.”
One of the biggest takeaways from the interview is that even those who think they support environmental causes may be exacerbating the problem.

“They don’t feel their members will want to hear the truth of what is happening,” Anderson says. “It’s easier to talk about some abstract concept like a dam they’ll never see, yet they can sign their name on it.”
