Henk Hofland en de Massa 84

In zijn essaybundel The Curtain (2007) schreef de auteur Milan Kundera met betrekking tot 'History and Value':

Let us imagine a contemporary composer writing a sonata that in its form, its harmonies, its melodies resembles Beethoven's. Let's even imagine that this sonata is so masterfully made that, if it had actually been by Beethoven, it would count among his greatest works. And yet no matter how magnificent made that, if it had actually been by Beethoven, it would count among his greatest works. And yet no matter how magnificent, signed by a contemporary composer it would be laughable. At best its author would be applauded as virtuoso of pastiche… historical consciousness is so thoroughly inherent in our perception of art that this anachronism (a Beethoven piece written toady) would be spontaneously (that is, without the least hypocrisy) felt to be ridiculous, false, incongruous, even monstrous. Our feeling for continuity is so strong that it enters into the perception of any work of art.

Hooftprijs gaf, zo lachwekkend is.

Welnu, 'sprezzatura' is 'as a form of defensive irony: the ability to disguise what one really desires, feels, thinks, and means or intends behind a mask of apparent reticence and nonchalance.'

The West's War Against the World (2015).

Globalization has reduced many aspects of modern life to little more than commodities controlled by multinational corporations. Everything, from land and water to health and human rights, is today intimately linked to the issue of free trade. Conventional wisdom presents this development as benign, the sole path to progress.

Yash Tandon, drawing on decades of on-the-ground experience as a high level negotiator in bodies such as the World Trade Organization (WTO), here challenges this prevailing orthodoxy. He insists that, for the vast majority of people, and especially those in the poorer regions of the world, free trade not only hinders development – it visits relentless waves of violence and impoverishment on their lives.

Trade Is War shows how the WTO and the Economic Partnership Agreements like the EU-Africa EPA and the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) are camouflaged in a rhetoric that hides their primary function as the servants of global business. Their actions are inflaming a crisis that extends beyond the realm of the economic, creating hot wars for markets and resources, fought between proxies in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and now even in Europe.

In these pages Tandon suggests an alternative vision to this devastation, one based on self-sustaining, non-violent communities engaging in trade based on the real value of goods and services and the introduction of alternative currencies.

Daarom Yash Tandon:

By the turn of the nineteenth century, while Russia was in chaos and America was busy colonizing its own hinterland (like Mexico) and former Spanish colonies (like Cuba), and neo-colonizing South America, the Europeans met in Berlin in 1884-85, put a map of Africa on the table and systematically divided sub-Saharan Africa among themselves. There were some 'independent' countries. Liberia was one of these, but it was already an American 'colony.' Sout Africa and Ethipia were later 'conquered' — the first by the British and the second by Italy. So from the end of the nineteenth century to the end of the Second Imperial War in 1939-45, the 'world' was comprised of the 'West' and the 'Rest.' The West ruled; the Rest did not matter.

Colonial and financial empires as practiced in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries by Europe and America were consciously designed to benefit their own peoples, not the colonized peoples. The latter were coerced through political, economic, and military domination to produce raw materials, food, and minerals that were processed in the empires.

Things changed after 1945. The colonized peoples revolted against the imperial system. Also, the US demanded that the European imperial nations open their colonies to American trade and investment. Under this double assault, Europe was obliged to 'give' the colonies political independence. However, the old systems of direct financial and trade controls were revamped into new forms to serve the same imperial objectives. This story shows how the Europeans and the American maintained their dominance over trade and production in the old colonies of the South.

Daarom opnieuw Trade is War. Yash Tandon:

The conditions in the world changed again after 1989 with the collapse of the Soviet Union. The developed countries decided they had different needs and again altered their demands through a series of international trade treaties,

The other part is the resistance by the rest of is the resistance by the Rest against the West.

Professor Tandon:

If small and middle-sized countries that do not 'follow the rules' as dictated by the big powers that effectively control the WTO (de World Trade Organisation. svh), then they are — collectively and individually — subjected to sanctions. I take Africa for purposed of illustration in this book, but this applies to all weaker members of the so-called 'international community,' including BRICS — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. BRICS are, of course, large countries. However, in the arena of world trade, technology, intellectual property and international finance, they are still relatively weak.

Professor Yash Tandon: 'America and Europe continue their war over Africa's markets and resources.'

The inequities of the global trading system are glossed over in an ideological camouflage.' Tandon:

The WTO is essentially a conspiratorial organization. Its decisions are made by a few select members (the big powers plus a small number of countries from the South elected by the North) in so-called 'green rooms.' These decisions are then binding even on those not present.

Net als de EU en de NAVO en alle andere instituten waar de macht ingrijpende besluiten vastlegt, is ook de 'WTO is definitely not a democratic organization.' Daar komt nog bij dat

Europe engages in trade negotiations with Africa and that too is an act of war. I have knowledge and personal experience (now for nearly thirty years) of the way the European Union has been pushing 'Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) on African, Caribbean, and Pacific (ACP) countries… It is not war in the ordinary sense of the term — war with bombs and drones — but trade in the capitalist-imperial era is as lethal, and as much of a 'weapon of mass destruction,' as bombs. Trade kills people; it drives people to poverty; it creates wealth at one end and poverty at another; it enriches the powerful food corporations at the cost of marginalizing poor peasants, who then become economic refugees in their own countries or who (those that are able-bodied) attempt to leave their countries to look for employment in the rich countries of  the West — across the Mediterranean from Africa, across the Mexican border with the USA, across the seas from South Asia to Australia.

Kortom, 'Trade' is

a weapon of war between the rich nations of the West and the rest of the world… since the beginning of the West's colonization of the regions of the South. For the last five hundred years, trade has been a serial war against the peoples of the South. From the slave trade to the commodities trade, it has been a story of relentless war waged by the industrializing countries against the countries that supplied slaves some five hundred years ago, and that have been supplying commodities in recent times… the history of trade, especially since the birth of capitalism, has been written in blood and violence. The dominant economic theory argues that trade is the 'motor' of growth, that is good for nations to engage in trade. The truth is that over the last five centuries, some nations have grown at the expense of the others. Also, growth does not translate into development for all people, even in the countries that exploit other countries. It is development for the rich, crumbs for the rest. Hence, the theory that it is good for nations to engage in trade is palpably false.

In the case of Africa, the  European Commission (EC) has been using all means at its command to force the continent to sign EPAs (Economic Partnership Agreements. svh) Europe is twisting the arm of African states to sign EPAs in order to have access to Africa's commodity resources for European industries. The resource war is part of the trade war.

Earth Enters Sixth Extinction Phase With Many Species – Including Our Own – Labelled 'The Walking Dead'
By Rose Troup Buchanan

June 21, 2015 "Information Clearing House" - "The Independent" - The planet is entering a new period of extinction with top scientists warning that species all over the world are “essentially the walking dead” – including our own.

The report, authored by scientists at Stanford, Princeton and Berkeley universities, found that vertebrates were vanishing at a rate 114 times faster than normal.

In the damning report, published in the Science Advances journal, researchers note that the last similar event was 65 million years ago, when dinosaurs disappeared, most probably as a result of an asteroid.

"We are now entering the sixth great mass extinction event," one of the authors of the paper told the BBC.

Gerardo Ceballos, lead author of the research, added: "If it is allowed to continue, life would take many millions of years to recover and our species itself would likely disappear early on"

The research examined historic rates of extinction for vertebrates, finding that since 1900 more than 400 vertebrates have disappeared – an extinction rate 100 times higher than in other – non-extinction – periods.

"There are examples of species all over the world that are essentially the walking dead,” said Stanford University professor Paul Ehrlich.

He added: "We are sawing off the limb that we are sitting on."

The research, which cites climate change, pollution and deforestation as causes for the rapid change, notes that a knock-on effect of the loss of entire ecosystems could be dire.
As our ecosystems unravel, the Centre for Biological Diversity has noted that we could face a “snowball” effect whereby individual species extinction ultimately fuels more losses.

The report, which builds on findings published by Duke University last year, does note that averting this loss is “still possible through intensified conservation effects,” but that “window of opportunity is rapid closing.”

DEEP HYPOCRISY ON CUBA AND EGYPT

by
In an editorial last Saturday calling for the lifting of the U.S. government’s ban on travel to Cuba, the New York Times pointed out two things that reflect the warped thinking and deep hypocrisy that have long characterized U.S. foreign policy.
First, the editorial pointed out that the U.S. travel ban against Cuba was part of “a strategy to punish and isolate Cuba in hopes of bringing about democratic relations with Havana.” Second, the “House has set aside $30 million for pro-democracy programs, $10 million more than the Obama administration requested.”
What’s warped and hypocritical about those “pro-democracy” points?
Think Egypt, a country that has long been ruled by one of the most brutal, anti-democratic, dictatorial regimes in history. In fact, the Egyptian military dictatorship is the very epitome of a tyrannical regime.
What does that have to do with U.S. officials?
They are full partners and supporters of the Egyptian dictatorship! In fact, once the Egyptian military brutes destroyed Egypt’s short-lived experiment with democracy (you remember the “Arab Spring,” right?), U.S. officials proceeded to flood Egypt with U.S. foreign aid, primarily in the form of weaponry and military equipment.
Why weaponry and military equipment? Is Egypt at war? Well, no, unless you consider a war against the Egyptian people to be a real war. The military tyrants have not only smashed democracy, they have also smashed any criticism of their brutal tyranny. If anyone even thinks of criticizing those military brutes, he’s kidnapped, arrested, tortured, reeducated, and maybe even executed by the government’s enforcement goons.
No freedom of speech, no freedom of the press, no right to demonstrate or protest, no right to petition for redress of grievances, no right to keep and bear arms, and no right to due process or jury trials.
How do they maintain all that “order and stability,” which is the goal of every tyrannical regime?
You guessed it — with all that weaponry and military equipment that the U.S. government has furnished this brutal military dictatorship for decades. That’s what the tanks, guns, bullets, and the rest of the U.S. support is for — to enable Egypt’s military tyrants to maintain their iron grip on power and privilege by smashing or killing anyone who objects.
Oh sure, U.S. officials are always ready to deliver their pretty little speeches about Castro’s totalitarian tyranny but when asked how Castro’s tyranny is any different from the Egyptian tyranny that U.S. officials support and partner with, U.S. officials go silent and just glare.
The truth is that the U.S. taxpayer monies that are purportedly for “pro-democracy” programs in Cuba are nothing of the sort. Their objection to Castro has always been personal. They simply don’t like the guy because from the time he gained power, he never kowtowed to the U.S. government.
Thus, what U.S. officials, especially those in the national-security branch of the federal government, want in Cuba is what they have always wanted — regime change, with the hopes of installing their own brutal dictatorship in Cuba, just like in Egypt or, for that matter, just like Iran, Chile, Guatemala, and, well, Cuba, where U.S. officials supported and partnered with Fulgencio Batista, the crooked, corrupt, brutal, pro-U.S. tyrant who ruled Cuba before Castro violently ousted him from power.
After all, let’s not forget that while U.S. officials declaim against Castro’s totalitarian political system, they fully embrace his socialist economic system as well as elements of his political system. Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, public schooling, state universities, gun control, drug laws, economic regulations, central bank, immigration and trade controls, travel restrictions, income taxation, fiat money, standing army, and secret state surveillance. It’s all there as part and parcel of Castro’s socialist system, just like it is here in the United States (under the rubric of “freedom and free enterprise”).
Finally, let’s not forget that the U.S. travel ban, along with the entire economic embargo against Cuba, is a totalitarian-like control over the American people. If you travel to Cuba and spend your own money there, it’s not Castro who will jail you. It’s your own government — the U.S. government, the government that represents itself to be a paragon of freedom and democracy around the world.
Like I say, warped thinking and deep hypocrisy. They are the core elements in U.S. foreign policy.
