Minister Asscher's Toneelstukje 7

The Hollow Men.

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

Those who have crossed
With direct eyes, to death’s other Kingdom
Remember us—if at all—not as lost
Violent souls, but only
As the hollow men
The stuffed men…
Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow
                                Life is very long

Between the desire
And the spasm
Between the potency
And the existence
Between the essence
And the descent
Falls the Shadow
                                For Thine is the Kingdom

For Thine is
Life is
For Thine is the

This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
This is the way the world ends
Not with a bang but a whimper.
T.S. Elliot. The Hollow Men. 1925

Een jaar voordat Elliot The Hollow Men schreef, formuleerde de Amerikaanse publicist Samuel Strauss de Nieuwe Orde als volgt:
Formerly the task was to supply the things that men wanted; the new necessity is to make men want the things which machinery must turn out if this civilization is not to perish... the problem before us today is not how to produce the goods, but how to produce the customers.
We must shift America from a needs- to a desires-culture. People must be trained to desire, to want new things, even before the old have been entirely consumed. [...] Man's desires must overshadow his needs.

the only legitimate measure of worth seems to be what is desired, and the best indication of that is what sells. All else isw deemed arbitrary. Yet when it is all marketing, there is less space for professional or artistic integrity.

Volgens hem is economie steeds ingebed in sociale maatschappelijke relaties.

The political philosopher Sheldon Wolin uses the term ‘inverted totalitarianism’ in his book ‘Democracy Incorporated’ to describe our political system. It is a term that would make sense to Huxley. In inverted totalitarianism, the sophisticated technologies of corporate control, intimidation and mass manipulation, which far surpass those employed by previous totalitarian states, are effectively masked by the glitter, noise and abundance of a consumer society. Political participation and civil liberties are gradually surrendered. The corporation state, hiding behind the smokescreen of the public relations industry, the entertainment industry and the tawdry materialism of a consumer society, devours us from the inside out. It owes no allegiance to us or the nation. It feasts upon our carcass.

not only cut the ground from under the market orthodoxy that had shaped politics for a generation, but rehabilitated state intervention overnight. By the scale of their bailouts to save the baking system, nationalizations and boosts in demand, governments gave an object lesson in what could in fact be done. After decades in which the market had been unchallenged, Keynes and Marx were back in fashion and the political and corporate elites destabilized.

But as soon as the immediate threat had passed, pressure to restore the old order and shuffle off the costs of the slump rapidly turned a crisis of the market and the banks into a crisis of the state and public debt.

Oftewel:

the good jobs are here among us right now -- it’s just their wages, their benefits, and the long-term security that have vanished…

Good jobs disappeared into bad jobs so deftly that hardly anyone has noticed the switcheroo.  Soon enough the zombie jobs that replace the real ones will move among us as if they were normal.  If you sense that there’s something missing, there must be something wrong with you.  Get with the program.  We’re becoming a freelance nation.

Anyone who lives within their means suffers from a lack of imagination.

Het is niet anders.

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
