Vriendelijke groeten, Bessel Dekker 14 feb 2007 06:16 (CET)

Joris1919 15 feb 2007 23:15 (CET)

Dat zal ik dan wel even doen. Lexw 15 feb 2007 23:20 (CET)

. . Geloof je me? Dag schatje.
Martien Pennings.'

The Israel Lobby

House vote against Palestinian statehood actually showed that Israel lobby is losing its grip

Yesterday the House of Representatives passed a resolution, H.Res.1765, “condemning unilateral measures to declare or recognize a Palestinian state.” At first glance, this vote appears to be yet another in a long string of resolutions shoring up unconditional Congressional support for Israeli occupation and apartheid. In reality, however, it demonstrates more a weakening—rather than a strengthening—of support for Israel on Capitol Hill at present.

“How does House passage of another anti-Palestinian resolution exhibit a slackening of Congressional support for Israel?” you might rightfully ask. Allow me to explain the paradox.

As are most “pro-Israel” resolutions, H.Res.1765 was brought to a vote under a procedure known as “suspension of the rules.” This procedure, which is supposed to be reserved for non-controversial resolutions such as the naming of a post office, prohibits the resolution from being amended and limits debate on it. In exchange for these restrictions, the resolution must get at least a 2/3 vote to pass rather than a simple majority.

However, unlike most “pro-Israel” resolutions, which often are not voted on for months after being introduced in order to give the Israel lobby time to marshal an overwhelming number of co-sponsors, H.Res.1765 was pushed through quickly with the co-sponsorship of only 53 Representatives.

In fact, the resolution was done in such a helter-skelter fashion that it was put on the calendar for a vote late Tuesday night while Rep. Howard Berman, Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, was still drafting it. Most Congressional offices did not even see the text of the resolution until a few hours prior to the vote. Many Congressional offices were reportedly infuriated that such an important foreign policy declaration was being treated in such an inconsiderate manner.

The ability of the Israel lobby to pass a resolution before the text of it is even officially made public undoubtedly reflects its still-considerable power. However, the way in which the resolution was debated and voted upon demonstrates that all is not well in the fairy tale world of Israel’s supporters on Capitol Hill.

Berman, who managed the debate on the House floor for the Democrats, appeared flustered and befuddled as he looked repeatedly and anxiously around the chamber for Representatives to appear magically to speak on behalf of the resolution. In the end, Berman mustered only himself and three other Jewish Representatives—Gary Ackerman, Eliot Engel, and Shelley Berkley—to offer full-throated support for the resolution.

The racism and paternalism of these Representatives’ statements make clear why so few of their colleagues wanted to associate themselves with this resolution. Berman patently knows what is best for Palestinians: “The Palestinian people don’t want a bunch of declarations of statehood.” And if Palestinians continue seeking the statehood that they don’t even really want, Berman reminded them that “This body [Congress] has been very generous in its support of their worthy efforts to build institutions and the economy in the West Bank. In fact, I believe that we are the most generous nation in the world in that regard. So I think our friends should understand: If they persist in pursuing a unilateralist path, inevitably, and however regrettably, there will be consequences for U.S-Palestinian relations.”

Without irony, Ackerman affirmed that “The only way to peace is negotiating in good faith and making the hard choices that it demands. Israel has shown time and again that it is ready.” He termed Palestinians’ objections to Israel colonizing their land as “overwrought.”

Engel called it “preposterous” to establish a Palestinian state based on the requirements of UN Security Council Resolution 242. At least he told the truth: “Everyone knows that Israel would never and could never agree with it.”

Last, but not least, Berkley excoriated Palestinians as if she were a teacher and they were students lollygagging in the hall after the bell rings. Palestinians must “return immediately to negotiations,” she thundered. Because “While Israel has a strong country and a good education system, a vibrant economy, a national identity, a cultural identity and a strong democracy, the Palestinians, because of their poor leadership, have absolutely none of those.”

Berman managed to trot out two more Democrats—Reps. Sheila Jackson-Lee and, I kid you not, the non-voting delegate of American Samoa Eni Faleomavaega—to make half-hearted statements of support. In her ponderous remarks, Jackson-Lee repeatedly advocated a “two-party state” to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and Faleomavaega must not have received the memo since he believes that “Palestine should be given as an independent and sovereign state.”

Republicans only eked out two speakers in support of the resolution, one of whom—Rep. Ted Poe—wondered aloud, “Is this [Palestinian state] going to be a sovereign state within the sovereign State of Israel?” Huh? Is this really the best that Israel’s advocates can do these days?

By contrast, Rep. Lois Capps did a masterful job of deconstructing the intent of the resolution. After rising “in very reluctant support” of what she termed “yet another one-sided resolution,” Capps decried the resolution for failing to mention “Israel’s expansion of settlements.” She noted that “Resolutions, like the one we are considering today, are clearly done for domestic political consumption much more than for having any positive impact on the conflict. We should not be ignorant of the fact that this Chamber’s pattern of passing resolutions that are one-sided can, indeed, undermine our credibility to be serious brokers for peace.”

Having been put in his place by Capps, Berman called for a voice vote rather than a recorded vote. Fewer than ten Representatives then on the floor voted by “unanimous consent” to adopt the resolution, giving the illusion that the entire House gave its imprimatur to it.

It is common for only a few Representatives to be on the floor when a unanimous consent vote is taken; however, it is highly unusual for the Israel lobby not to ask for a recorded vote so that its supporters can be rewarded and opponents can be punished. In the case of H.Res.1765, Berman clearly feared that a recorded vote would have led to an embarrassing outcome: more Representatives agreeing with Capps’ assessment and voting to express their displeasure at the resolution.

Growing unease on Capitol Hill over these “one-sided resolutions” is attributable to several factors: Israel’s deliberate humiliation of President Obama on settlements; recognition that Israeli and U.S. interests are not one and the same; and a hard-to-define yet palpable Israel fatigue.

Driving and reinforcing this change of sentiment on Capitol Hill is an increasingly effective grassroots movement demanding a change in U.S. policy toward Israel/Palestine to support human rights, international law, and equality. A few hours after breaking the news about the vote on H.Res.1765, the US Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation collected nearly 9,000 signatures on a petition opposing the resolution that was delivered to Berman prior to the vote. At least a half a dozen national organizations, and many more local ones, put out similar alerts.

Several Congressional offices marveled at this efficient outpouring of coordinated opposition and said yesterday that they were receiving many calls against H.Res.1765. While the Israel lobby retains enormous power and influence, the tides are beginning to turn. Join this growing movement today!

"The gentiles will always find excuses for anti-Semitism. They will say Jews are richer, they separate themselves from the rest of society, geniuses etc... None of these reasons justifies anti-Semitism, but you can't change the outlook of Jew-hatred through rational arguments." (ynetnews.com)

Hoe moet je zoiets noemen? Antigentilisme? Goyofobie?

http://deisraellobby.blogspot.com/2010/12/nederlandse-opperrabijn-binyomin-jacobs.html

Forty years ago, a book entitled The Greening of America caused a sensation. On the cover were these words: "There is a revolution coming. It will not be like revolutions of the past. It will originate with the individual." I was a correspondent in the United States at the time and recall the overnight elevation to guru status of the author, a young Yale academic, Charles Reich. His message was that political action had failed and only "culture" and introspection could change the world. This merged with an insidious corporate public relations campaign aimed at reclaiming western capitalism from the sense of freedom inspired by the civil rights and anti-war movements. The new propaganda's euphemisms were postmodernism, consumerism and "me-ism".
The self was now the zeitgeist. Driven by the forces of profit and the media, the search for individual consciousness all but overwhelmed the spirit of social justice and internationalism. A new deity was proclaimed; the personal was the political.
In 1995, Reich published Opposing the System, in which he recanted almost everything in The Greening of America. "There will be no relief from either economic insecurity or human breakdown," he now wrote, "until we recognize that uncontrolled economic forces create conflict, not well-being . . ." There were no queues in the bookstores this time. In the age of economic neoliberalism, Reich was out of step with the rampant individualism of the west's new political and cultural elite.
False Tribunes
The revival of militarism in the west and the search for a new "threat" following the end of the cold war depended on the political disorientation of those who, 20 years earlier, would have formed a vehement opposition. On 11 September 2001, they were silenced finally, and many were co-opted into the "war on terror". The invasion of Afghanistan in October 2001 was supported by leading feminists, especially in the US, where Hillary Clinton and other false tribunes of feminism made the Taliban's treatment of Afghan women the rationale for attacking a stricken country and causing the deaths of at least 20,000 people while giving the Taliban new life. That the warlords backed by America were as medievalist as the Taliban was not allowed to interrupt such a right-on cause. The zeitgeist, the years of "personal" depoliticizing and distracting true radicalism, had worked. Nine years later, the disaster that is Afghanistan is the consequence.
It seems the lesson must be learned all over again as a group of media feminists joins the assault on Julian Assange and WikiLeaks, or the "Wikiblokesphere", as Libby Brooks abuses it in the Guardian. From the Times to the New Statesman, apparent feminist credence is given to the chaotic, incompetent and contradictory accusations against Assange in Sweden.
On 9 December, the Guardian published a long, supine interview by Amelia Gentleman with Claes Borgström, the "highly respected Swedish lawyer". In fact, Borgström is foremost a politician, a powerful member of the Social Democratic Party. He intervened in the Assange case only when the senior prosecutor in Stockholm dismissed the "rape" allegation as based on "no evidence". In Gentleman's Guardian article, an anonymous source whispers to us that Assange's "behaviour towards women . . . was going to get him into trouble". This smear was taken up by Brooks in the paper that same day. Ken Loach and I and others on "the left" are "shoulder to shoulder" with the misogynists and "conspiracy theorists". To hell with journalistic inquiry. Ignorance and prejudice rule.
The Australian barrister James Catlin, who acted for Assange in October, says that both women in the case told prosecutors that they consented to have sex with Assange. Following the "crime", one of the women threw a party in honour of Assange. When Borgström was asked why he was representing the women, as both denied rape, he said: "Yes, but they are not lawyers." Catlin describes the Swedish justice system as "a laughing stock". For three months, Assange and his lawyers have pleaded with the Swedish authorities to let them see the prosecution case. This was denied until 18 November, when the first official document arrived - in the Swedish language, contrary to European law.
Unveiled Threat
Assange still has not been charged with anything. He has never been a "fugitive". He sought and got permission to leave Sweden, and the British police have known his whereabouts since his arrival in this country. This did not stop a London magistrate on 7 December ignoring seven sureties and sending him to solitary confinement in Wandsworth Prison.
At every turn, Assange's basic human rights have been breached. The cowardly Australian government, which is legally obliged to support its citizen, has made a veiled threat to take away his passport. In her public remarks, the prime minister, Julia Gillard, has shamefully torn up the presumption of innocence that underpins Australian law. The Australian minister for foreign affairs ought to have called in both the Swedish and the US ambassadors to warn them against any abuse of human rights against Assange, such as the crime of incitement to murder.
In contrast, vast numbers of decent people all over the world have rallied to Assange's support: people who are neither misogynists nor "internet attack dogs", to quote Libby Brooks, and who support a very different set of values from those espoused by Charles Reich. They include many distinguished feminists, such as Naomi Klein, who wrote: "Rape is being used in the Assange prosecution in the same way that women's freedom was used to invade Afghanistan. Wake up!"

The New Tax Deal: Reaganomics Redux

More than thirty years ago, Ronald Reagan came to Washington intent on reducing taxes on the wealthy and shrinking every aspect of government except defense.
The new tax deal embodies the essence of Reaganomics.
It will not stimulate the economy.
A disproportionate share of the $858 billion deal will go to people in the top 1 percent who spend only a fraction of what they earn and save the rest. Their savings are sent around the world to wherever they will earn the highest return.
The only practical effect of adding $858 billion to the deficit will be to put more pressure on Democrats to reduce non-defense spending of all sorts, including Social Security and Medicare, as well as education and infrastructure.
It is nothing short of Ronald Reagan’s (and David Stockman’s) notorious “starve the beast” strategy.
In 2012, an election year, when congressional Democrats have less power than they do now, the pressure to extend the Bush tax cuts further will be overwhelming.
Worse yet, the deal adds to the underlying structural problem that caused the Great Recession in the first place.
Since Ronald Reagan was president, median hourly wages have barely budged, and America’s vast working and middle classes have taken home a steadily smaller share of the nation’s income (adjusted for inflation). The typical male worker today is earning less than the typical male worker thirty years ago.
Yet the richest 1 percent of Americans is now taking home a larger percentage of the nation’s income than at any time since 1928. And we recall what happened in 1929.
Unless the vast majority of Americans has enough purchasing power to keep the economy going without going ever more deeply into debt, the economy will eventually go over a cliff.
That’s what happened in 1929 and 2008.
By the late 1990s the middle and working classes could keep spending — and thereby keep the economy moving — only by adding debt. This strategy ended when the housing bubble burst in 2007.
Without their spending, there can be no buoyant recovery.
Yes, the pending tax bill will give America’s middle and working classes slightly more cash next year. But only for one year. They won’t spend it. They’ll use it to help pay down their debts.
Will lower taxes on the rich spur them to create more jobs? Not a chance. Since 1980, Reagan’s supply-siders have said lower taxes on the rich will trickle down to everyone else. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Look at history.
During the almost three decade spanning 1951 to 1980, when the top rate was between 70 and 92 percent, the average annual growth in the American economy was 3.7 percent.
Between 1983 and the start of the Great Recession, when the top rate ranged between 35 percent and 39 percent, average growth was 3 percent.
Supply siders are also fond of claming that Ronald Reagan’s 1981 tax cuts caused the 1980s economic boom. There is no evidence to support this claim. In fact, that boom followed Reagan’s 1982 tax increase. The 1990s boom likewise was not the result of a tax cut; most of it followed Bill Clinton’s 1993 tax increase.
Nor did George W. Bush’s tax cuts trickle down. Between 2002 and 2007 the median wage actually dropped. And Bush’s record of job creation was pathetic relative to Bill Clinton’s, when taxes were higher. Under Clinton, America added 22 million net new jobs. Under Bush, barely 8 million.
So why are Democrats voting for Reaganomics?
They say they have no choice — either vote for this or watch taxes rise on everyone starting January 1.
That Democrats have allowed themselves to get into this fix is a testament to either their timidity, obtuseness, or dependence on the campaign contributions of those at the top

Onbeweeglijk. De palestijnse chauffeur claxonneert en geeft lichtsignalen. Er gebeurt niks. We wachten tien minuten.

We rijden terug.

Praten over vrede.

Uri Rosenthal. Een Nederlandse Minister 13

Dutch FM: Ties with Israel are like our bond with NATO

Uri Rosenthal, a son of Holocaust survivors and married to an Israeli, stresses that his Jewish background and Israeli link don't affect his decisions.

By Cnaan Liphshiz
A hardened scientist specialized in analyzing and managing mega-crises, Dutch Foreign Minister Uri Rosenthal has limited patience for questions about his Jewish background and Israeli wife.
"I’m not thinking 24/7 that I’m from a Jewish background," says Rosenthal, the 65-year-old son of Dutch Holocaust survivors, when asked about the significance he attaches to his background.

"I'm at ease with my Jewish background. I’m not religious at all already from a very young age, though my parents kept some mitzvot," he says. His parents fled Holland in 1942 to Switzerland, where he was born in July 1945. They returned that year. Growing up in the Hague, he became professor of government studies at the University of Leiden before his ministerial appointment in October for the ruling liberal party, the VVD.
Rosenthal, who lives in Rotterdam, has two children with his wife, Dinah - a native Israeli from Haifa who came to the Netherlands after they met, and married in 1973. He often visits Israel, where he has family in Haifa and Ashkelon. "Sometimes I come a few times a year, sometimes only once in two years."

By the fourth question about his Jewish affiliation, he comments that he hopes the interview – his first for an Israeli paper - will not be “all about family life.” A tall, broad-shouldered man with a calm, penetrative gaze, Rosenthal stresses his Jewish background and Israeli link do not affect his decisions.
Some have alleged otherwise. In June, television broadcaster Harry Mens theorized that Rosenthal - senate chairman of the center-right People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) - had formed a "kind of lobby" with two other prominent Jewish leaders from the opposition: then Amsterdam mayor Lodewijk Asscher of Labor, and the leftist party’s chairman, Job Cohen.
Mens described this “alliance” as a “kongsi” – originally a Chinese word describing informal councils of exiles. A few weeks earlier, De Telegraaf, the country’s most-read daily, ran a column alluding to a “secret coalition” being forged by the same three Jewish politicians.
“I can only use the word stupid,” Rosenthal says in describing the kongsi theory. “It was simply a stupid, uninformed and nonsensical message, but not a new one. The same conspiracy story regularly pops up in the U.S.”
According to the Center on Information and Documentation on Israel – a watchdog on anti-Semitism – attacks against Jews have increased last year by roughly 50 percent compared to 2008. Rosenthal calls this trend “a genuine problem.” He added: “We have to address and solve this problem by ourselves. Perhaps up until now, the Amsterdam authorities have been lenient on it.”

Rosenthal says he believes in the Middle East policy of his predecessor, Maxime Verhagen, who now heads the Christian-Democrat party - VVD's coalition partner. Verhagen was seen as one of Israel’s staunchest supporters in Europe.
One of Rosenthal’s first statements regarding Israel as minister concerned the website The Electronic Intifada. Upon learning that the site – cofounded by a member of Dutch parliament – received support from a government-funded Christian humanitarian organization, Rosenthal said he will have “a hard talk” with the aid group, ICCO.
The Electronic Intifada acts as a news service to activists and members of the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement - a loose international collection of people and institutions working to boycott Israel, which has been compared on the site to Nazi Germany. In 2010 the site has been found to have disseminated two false reports of boycotts of Israel by Dutch financial organizations.
“This site promotes policies which are totally at odds and diametrically opposite to the position of the Dutch government,” Rosenthal says. “Now, I don’t think all publically-funded organizations have a duty to adhere precisely to the position of the government, but there is a limit.”
Rosenthal compares calls to cut ties with Israel to demands to sever ties with NATO – a bond which according to researchers from the University of Twente has “determined a large part of Dutch foreign policy.” “It’s like government support for an organization saying we should totally sever our ties with NATO, while the Dutch government feels itself a strong supportive member state,” Rosenthal said.
The Jerusalem-based NGO Monitor has accused the Dutch embassy in Tel Aviv of having a pro-Palestinian agenda. This month Dutch politician Geert Wilders, who supports the coalition from outside the government, told Haaretz that Rosenthal should “look into the actions” of the Dutch embassy.
“I know that there are stories going around about a biased position on the part of the Dutch embassy - a pro-Palestine position,” Rosenthal said. “But I have no reason to accept that claim.”
Earlier this year, Haaretz reported the Dutch embassy has funded the organization Breaking the Silence – which encourages Israeli soldiers to publicize alleged human rights violations – to the tune of 19,995 euros. Any funding over 20,000 euros requires approval from the Hague.
Officials from the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (VNG) said the embassy had advised them in September to dis-invite a delegation of Israeli mayors scheduled to visit Holland, because some hailed from West Bank settlements. The Dutch embassy and the foreign ministry have denied its involvement, claiming the initiative came from VNG.
“Furthermore, I think settlements are an impediment to the peace process,” Rosenthal added. “I know people in Israel living in places where they have from time to time to go to the shelters in pajamas and who say to me that they’d rather get rid themselves of the settlements. At the same time I’m very keen on countering the tendency to delegitimize Israel. I don’t like Israel-bashing.”
In the early 1990s, Rosenthal – an expert on terrorism – said left-wing extremism was more dangerous to the rule of law than right-wing extremism. But 15 years later, it appears the extreme right has gained much more prominence and even power in Europe compared to the extreme left.
“I made that remark in the context of a series of clashes between left wing and right wing radicals in the Netherlands,” Rosenthal says. “In those days attention went nearly exclusively to the radical right wing. The left wing activists were nearly not addressed. I made that statement to get some balance. And I think I was right to do so.”

Jewish Peace Activists 15

Dear Stan,
On December 10, International Human Rights Day, in 23 cities across America people of conscience took a historic stand for justice and equality for all people in the Middle East.

Side by side, Jews, Christians, and Muslims went to 23 individual offices of the US’s leading pension fund, TIAA-CREF, and said
do not use my money to profit from the Israeli Occupation. TIAA-CREF, divest from Caterpillar and other companies that profit from breaking the law, harming others and preventing peace.

You can watch the video for yourself to see people of every age in cities large and small across the United Statesfrom New York City to Iowa City, and from Washington DC to Seattle, Washington—all telling TIAA-CREF to stop profiting from destruction.

TIAA-CREF is one of the largest pension funds in the world, and they have invested over a quarter billion dollars in Caterpillar, which manufactures the bulldozers used by the Israeli government to demolish thousands of Palestinian homes and life-sustaining orchards. Caterpillar D-9 bulldozers are an essential tool of an occupation that steals land, destroys livelihoods and injures or kills civilians.

Every day that TIAA-CREF holds Caterpillar stocks is another day in which the financial giant profits from these human rights violations.

In some TIAA-CREF offices, company representatives received a copy of our divestment petition or met cordially, in others they distributed a form letter in response, and in one office they refused to honor a scheduled appointment with someone who has been invested with TIAA-CREF for 50 years.

TIAA-CREF simply does not offer participants an option for investments free from supporting the occupation. Even their socially responsible funds invest in Caterpillar.
Last Friday, December 10, was just the beginning. Additional TIAA-CREF participants have scheduled appointments to return to discuss their concerns. Many more continue to gather signatures for our divestment petition--we know that every signature from a TIAA-CREF holder makes a difference.

"We went to the University of Louisville, and together with the local Students for Justice in Palestine we collected 260 signatures for the TIAA-CREF petition in about 4 hours. That’s more than one signature a minute.”
Russ Greenleaf, Jewish Voice for Peace, Louisville, KY

"I was collecting signatures for an hour and a half at SUNY Cortland and was astonished at how easy it was. I thought it would be controversial, but every single person I approached signed. In fact, many thanked me for doing this, and told me how grateful they were that a Jewish organization is finally taking action on this issue. I didn't anticipate that."

Howard Botwinick, Associate Professor of Economics at the State University of New York-Cortland

People want to join you and the thousands who have already signed our petition. Now you can help them. Can you collect signatures? Forward this email? Every action you take matters- until all of TIAA-CREF's investments, and the lives of Palestinians are occupation-free.

This is just the beginning.
Thanks!
