Bordentown Mayor Really Sucks

Mayor Lynch. A real threat to American democracy. He should be chased out of town, any town.

"This website has to be removed" -- Mayor Lynch (Monday, May 24, 2010)

"I'm not going to go down the freedom of speech road" -- Mayor Lynch (Tuesday, May 25, 2010)

This is bigger than we could ever imagine!

An email from a new friend! Read on great Americans!

To Whom It May Concern,

I am not a resident of Bordentown City. In fact, I live on the opposite side of the country. I am, however, and American who enjoys my First Amendment rights. It is despicable to see a politician like Mayor Lynch wasting taxpayer dollars to take down a website he disagrees with. I will be visiting Trenton later this summer, and after reading about your Mayor’s out of touch, childish, and illegal campaign to shut down this site, I can guarantee you that I will never step foot in your city while that man is Mayor.

As you may or may not know, this story is starting to gain national traction. Representatives from the ACLU are chomping at the bit to protect the freedoms Mayor Lynch is trying to destroy. While it is unfortunate that the Mayor’s daughter was “threatened” by two detectives, that does not give him the right to try to shut down a website, based on his objections to the domain name. Unfortunately the Mayor has no proof that the website is related to his domestic problems. Until he can prove a connection, he can’t remove the site by law. He can’t remove the site anyway. In fact, there is nothing in the law, ANYWHERE, that gives him the right to abridge the First Amendment rights of the domain owner. In fact, satire is explicitly protected by the First Amendment. There is nothing libelous in the domain name, and he’s not misrepresenting the city at all.

Now, I’m not a lawyer, but I have common sense. It would appear as though your Mayor is just throwing a tantrum because someone doesn’t like him, or agree with his politics. There’s nothing wrong with that. In fact, I could say that I think the mayor an asshole, and there’s nothing that could stop me. Its my right. Its not libelous, its not slanderous. If the Mayor can’t handle people not liking him, or thinking he really sucks as a Mayor, perhaps he shouldn’t have sought re-election?

Again, this is just the comments of a bystander and someone who loves his First Amendment rights. Despite the Mayor’s quote, this is entirely a First Amendment issue perpetuated by a fear-mongering Mayor who can’t hold up to criticism.
