The Politics of Poverty:

A View of America by Greyhound Bus
Book-Record-Podcast Series Draws Attention to America's 'Struggling Class'

"The reality is that for so many, America is neither blue nor red, but white, like a blank sheet of unrecorded votes," says singer-songwriter Doug Levitt in "Greyhound Diaries."

"The people most affected by this election, are in fact, the most disaffected. See the thing about a lawn sign is you need a lawn. For many who travel by Greyhound, the itinerant, the laborers, the single parents, the veterans, the afflicted, much of daily life is triage. And when you're struggling to get by, politics can seem a world away, white people yelling on cable, a spectator sport of, by, and for others."

Levitt traveled the country by Greyhound for six weeks during the recent election, singing a modern protest song and taking "a rolling snapshot -- in words, images, and song -- of people struggling to get by."

Prior to becoming a singer-songwriter, Levitt was a journalist overseas ("your standard career path," he says in the first chapter/episode of the book, which is being released as a podcast series). Based in London, Doug filed dispatches from such places as Iran, Rwanda and Bosnia for, among others, ABC, CNN, The Christian Science Monitor, and NBC. "I thought I'd treat America as I would a foreign country in crisis, only with a guitar and an iBook covered in duct tape."

"Arthur T. had a gray beard and smelled of days. 'Hey, have you registered to vote?' Not a question he'd been asked often, not as often, at least, as, 'Do you have credit?' He stopped. It was strange, the whole interaction, like I was giving him a brief respite of self-respect. He took my blue felt-tip pen like it had been a while and wrote his name, address, checked that he was an American citizen. His 1946 birthday meant he was over 18, the only other requisite for the right to vote. He checked the Democrat box."

A graduate of the D.C. public schools and Cornell University, Doug received a Fulbright scholarship and has his masters in International Relations from the London School of Economics. The "Greyhound Diaries" EP was produced by David Henry (Guster, Josh Rouse, David Mead). It is Doug's first record -- and his first book. He lives in Los Angeles.

Levitt will be peforming an EP release show at The Hotel Cafe in Hollywood on Tuesday, April 11th at 8pm.
