De Israelische Terreur 344

'I wrote to a friend of mine in the West Bank an American who works
with an International NGO, to get her reading of the background of
the shocking yeshiva murders last week:

Q: What is your take on the attribution of the killings in Jerusalem
to the "Imad Mughniyeh brigade"? Was this a killing organized by an
established group, the debut of a new group, or just one angry guy
with a gun?
A: The Israeli's took that suggestion [i.e., Mughniyeh] from Al Manar
TV in Lebanon, also the Ahmad Salahadine Brigades took credit as did
a faction of Hamas. He may have been from an established group
(although I doubt it was anything called the "Mughniyeh" brigade).
The BBC Arabic radio did a good story on this man after talking with
his family. Although everyone wants a piece of this to soothe some
of the need for revenge (I know you saw the celebrating in the
streets of Gaza), I think it may have just been one man (a bus
driver) who went over the edge or had a personal beef with the
settlers. Mercaz Harav is a yeshiva for the right-wing settler
movement. They have really been squeezing the residents of E.
Jerusalem (both the government and the settlers, whose activity has
been increasing there)
The latest word today is that the gunman was most likely working
alone - this was a settler yeshiva, which was also giving courses in
para-military maneuvers and tactics (in other words, they were not
just religous scholars). Although it seems most likely now that it
was personal, if anything he may have had ties to Hamas. Hamas is
currently denying it, but speculation has been that it was to send a
message to the Israelis that if Hamas decided, they would be safe
nowhere. In the meantme, the Israelis have revoked the gunman's
family's Jerusalem residency cards and are planning to deport them to
Gaza (thus underscoring that even the Israelis consider it a prison)

triumph of anything is a matter of organization. If there are such
things as angels, I hope they are organized along the lines of the
Mafia."
