Derk Sauer

Derk Sauer, CEO, Independent Media Sanoma Magazines, with his wife Ellen Verbeek, Cosmopolitan, Russia.

'Ten years left to avert catastrophe.
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
Published: 02 February 2007

For the past six years, more than 2,000 scientists from around the world have been writing the most definitive and up-to-date assessment of climate change. It is the fourth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) since it was set up by the United Nations and the World Meteorological Organisation in 1988.
The first volume of this assessment - called Climate Change 2007: The Physical Science Basis - will be published today at a meeting in Paris. It will be followed later in the year by two more volumes concerned with what we can expect this century in terms of climate change effects, and what we can do to minimise the impact that those effects will have on our way of life.
It is clear from the draft version of the IPCC's fourth assessment report on the science of climate change there is little doubt that global warming is a reality, and incre…

More US Money Wasted in Iraq, Audit Finds
By Emad Mekay
Inter Press Service

Washington - Dozens of millions of dollars originally slated for the reconstruction and security of Iraq have been squandered on luxury items like an Olympic-sized swimming pool, VIP trailers, and buildings that were never or rarely used, a U.S. government watchdog says.
In eight new audits carried out over the past quarter alone, the U.S. Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction (SIGIR) Stuart Bowen indicated that "corruption continues to plague Iraq" and that "the security environment has continued to deteriorate."
The audits, submitted to Congress Wednesday, reviewed U.S. efforts to support the capacity development of Iraq's ministries, as well as the State Department's management of funding for Iraqi police training, a study of medical equipment purchased to support the primary healthcare centres, and a statistical summary of security cos…

'Impeachment by the People.
By Howard Zinn
The Progressive

Courage is in short supply in Washington, D.C. The realities of the Iraq War cry out for the overthrow of a government that is criminally responsible for death, mutilation, torture, humiliation, chaos. But all we hear in the nation's capital, which is the source of those catastrophes, is a whimper from the Democratic Party, muttering and nattering about "unity" and "bipartisanship," in a situation that calls for bold action to immediately reverse the present course.
These are the Democrats who were brought to power in November by an electorate fed up with the war, furious at the Bush Administration, and counting on the new majority in Congress to represent the voters. But if sanity is to be restored in our national policies, it can only come about by a great popular upheaval, pushing both Republicans and Democrats into compliance with the national will.

'Europeans fear US attack on Iran as nuclear row intensifies.
· Transatlantic rift emerges over how to handle crisis ·
America builds up its naval forces in the Gulf

Senior European policy-makers are increasingly worried that the US administration will resort to air strikes against Iran to try to destroy its suspect nuclear programme.
As transatlantic friction over how to deal with the Iranian impasse intensifies, there are fears in European capitals that the nuclear crisis could come to a head this year because of US frustration with Russian stalling tactics at the UN security council. "The clock is ticking," said one European official. "Military action has come back on to the table more seriously than before. The language in the US has changed."

As the Americans continue their biggest naval build-up in the Gulf since the start of the Iraq war four years ago, a transatlantic rift is opening up on several important aspects of the Iran dispute.

UNICEF, het kinderfonds van de VN, concludeerde in een rapport dat oktober 2004 werd gepubliceerd: ‘Iraq has experienced a bigger increase in under-five mortalitity rates than any country in the world and since the war there are several indications that under-five mortality has continues to rise.’ Tegenover Media Lens ( ) verklaarde UNICEF: ‘Since the war more children in Iraq are malnourished, fewer children are protected from immunisable diseases.’

'Iran Clock Is Ticking.
by Robert Parry

While congressional Democrats test how far they should go in challenging George W. Bush’s war powers, the time may be running out to stop Bush from ordering a major escalation of the Middle East conflict by attacking Iran.
Military and intelligence sources continue to tell me that preparations are advancing for a war with Iran starting possibly as early as mid-to-late February. The sources offer some differences of opinion over whether Bush might cite a provocation from Iran or whether Israel will take the lead in launching air strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities.
But there is growing alarm among military and intelligence experts that Bush already has decided to attack and simply is waiting for a second aircraft carrier strike force to arrive in the regio…

'Blood of the Earth: Dilip Hiro on the Battle for the World’s Vanishing Oil Resources

In his new book, veteran Middle East Journalist Dilip Hiro offers a detailed account of how and why the planet’s limited supply of oil has come to revolutionize human behavior, politics and warfare across the globe. He joins us for a wide-ranging interview.

As scientists in Paris finalize their report on the adverse effects of human-caused emissions on climate change, a new book offers a detailed account of how and why the planet’s limited supply of oil has come to revolutionize human behavior, politics and warfare across the globe. “Blood of the Earth: The Battle for the World’s Vanishing Oil Resources” is a detailed account of the history of oil. It reveals that when states replaced coal with oil, they scrambled to meet an unprecedented global energy demand.
The book details how states have attempted to meet a growing thirst for oil through economic expansion and all-out war. It also…

Rotterdam, 29 jan. Onderzoekers vergaderen vanaf vandaag in Parijs over het klimaat. Dat verandert razendsnel, heeft de wetenschap vastgesteld. …

Vergeten Verhalen

Engel: The title makes it pretty clear, but what's the message of Endgame." We're at the end of our rope?
Jensen: We are in a crisis. We are literally in the midst of 'the Apocalypse.' The dominant culture is not going to change. What I'm saying in "Endgame" Volumes 1 and Volume 2, is if you really believe the culture must change, what does that mean for your strategy and your tactics? For the most part we all say we don't know because we don't talk about it. The reason we don't talk about it is because we are all so busy pretending that things are going to somehow magically work out if we can just buy fair trade or something.
Engel: Do you think you'll reach the "general public," or are you, if you'll pardon the term, "preaching to the converted?"
Jensen: My audience consists mainly of people who already recognize ho…

De Independent bericht: Global Warming: The vicious circle.
By Steve Connor, Science Editor
The effects of man-made emissions of carbon dioxide are being felt on every inhabited continent in the world with very different parts of the climate now visibly responding to human activity.
These are among the main findings of the most intensive study of climate change by 2,000 of the world's leading climate scientists. They conclude that there is now little doubt that human activity is changing the face of the planet.
In addition to rising surface temperatures around the world, scientists have now linked man-made emissions of greenhouse gases to significant increases in ocean temperatures, rises in sea levels and the dramatic melting of Arctic sea ice over the past 35 years.
A draft copy of the fourth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that global temperature rises this century of between 2C and 4.5C are almost inevitable. Ominously, however, it also says that…

De New York Times bericht:

'On Iran, Bush Faces Haunting Echoes of Iraq.

Washington - As President Bush and his aides calibrate how directly to confront Iran, they are discovering that both their words and their strategy are haunted by the echoes of four years ago - when their warnings of terrorist activity and nuclear ambitions were clearly a prelude to war.
This time, they insist, it is different.
"We're not looking for a fight with Iran," R. Nicholas Burns, the under secretary of state for policy and the chief negotiator on Iranian issues, said in an interview on Friday evening, just a few hours after Mr. Bush had repeated his warnings to Iran to halt "killing our soldiers" and to stop its drive for nuclear fu…

Ilan Pappe 3

'Saudi king says no interest in assisting anyone against Iran.

Saudi Arabia's King Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz has said his country had no interest in either interfering in Iran's internal affairs or assisting anyone against Tehran, Kuwait-based daily Arab Times reported on Saturday.
In an interview with the Times recently, the Saudi king said he had sent a message to the Iranian government explaining about Saudi's stance through a call with Iran's top nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani.
The Saudi leader denied a saying that his country allies with those who are against Iran and said "we never interfere in the internal affairs of others" as "we are busy developing and building our nation."
He said his country does not want anyone to be an enemy of Iran as well as the other five Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, namely Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Bahrain and Oman, which have mutual security treaties.
"I explained our experienc…

De New York Times bericht:
'Israel May Have Violated Arms Pact, U.S. Officials Say.
The Bush administration will inform Congress on Monday that Israel may have violated agreements with the United States when it fired American-supplied cluster munitions into southern Lebanon during its fight with Hezbollah last summer, the State Department said Saturday.
The finding, though preliminary, has prompted a contentious debate within the administration over whether the United States should penalize Israel for its use of cluster munitions against towns and villages where Hezbollah had placed its rocket launchers.
Cluster munitions are anti-personnel weapons that scatter tiny but deadly bomblets over a wide area. The grenadelike munitions, tens of thousands of which have been found in southern Lebanon, have caused 30 deaths and 180 injuries among civilians since the end of the war, according to the United Nations Mine Action Service.
Midlevel officials at the Pentagon and the State Department h…

Information Clearing House: 'Gangsters for Capitalism.
By Clinton L. Cox Although benign U.S. intentions are an article of faith among many Americans, theft, murder and oppression have always been central to U.S. policies and practices in the non-white world. George Bush’s crusade for ‘democracy’ is yet another chapter in the shameful saga.
“The U.S. has routinely destroyed democracy throughout the globe while its leaders spout words about spreading democracy.” “I spent thirty-three years and four months in active military service as a member of this country’s most agile military force, the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from Second Lieutenant to Major-General. And during that period, I spent most of my time being a high class muscle-man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the Bankers. In short, I was a racketeer, a gangster for capitalism.... “I helped make Mexico, especially Tampico, safe for American oil interests in 1914. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a de…

Chalmers Johnson 5

Chalmers Johnson schrijft: 'A National Intelligence Estimate on the United States(1) By Chalmers Johnson(2)KEY JUDGMENTS "Harpers Magazine" -- -- The United States remains, for the moment, the most powerful nation in history, but it faces a violent contradiction between its long republican tradition and its more recent imperial ambitions. The fate of previous democratic empires suggests that such a conflict is unsustainable and will be resolved in one of two ways. Rome attempted to keep its empire and lost its democracy. Britain chose to remain democrat¬ic and in the process let go its empire. Intentionally or not, the people of the United States already are well embarked upon the course of non-democratic empire. Several factors, however, indicate that this course will be a brief one, which most likely will end in economic and political collapse. Military Keynesianism: The imperial project is expensive. The flow of the nation’s wealth – from taxpayers and (increasingly) …
